Finding your feet at uni is tough – any first year student can describe it – but nothing prepared Tom Young for the toxic addiction that followed. Sonia Raju shares his story at the University of Birmingham.

It was 4AM as I stumbled up the stairs, my heart was palpitating out of my chest. I knew that I had taken it too far that night.

I shook furiously. The energy left my body as I collapsed onto the bed and the bottle of vodka, gin and two bottles of wine sloshed in my stomach. A cold sweat covered my whole body, and I could feel the drugs pulsing through my veins. Why did I have a cocaine, MDMA and ketamine cocktail?
